the wrist having a glass of wine on nye
so heres the story of how i shattered my wrist:
it was a cold dreary morning on december 22, 2011 and i was in the kitchen trying to clean up after kball when i just freakishly slipped (i was walking really fast with just socks on). it happened so fast, i dont even know how i fell in order to land completely on my wrist, but thats what happened. jake was walking about the door and luckily he saw/heard me fall and keya saw it too. she started screaming hysterically (that was so sad and depressing) and jake ran over to me. i knew right away something was wrong but i was just trying to hold keya and comfort her while inside i was in an unbelievable amount of pain. jake cancelled his appt, ran upstairs to put keya down for a nap, so i could figure out what was going on. i knew i had to go to the ER because i had broken both of my hands before and knew the drill. i tried to put on some clothes, ended up just leaving on my pajamas, and started driving to the hospital. i made it about a half a mile and was still in my neighborhood and i knew i couldnt drive anymore. i was starting to shake from the pain and then i saw my neighbor barb driving towards me. her white car was like an angel singing to me, and i unrolled the window and just started crying and told her to take me to the ER. so we went to the ER and i quickly found out that i didnt just have a simple break, but i had shattered my wrist and i needed emergency surgery otherwise i wouldnt have any blood flowing to the broken bone and it would die. i FREAKED out because a)i have a kid b)what the hell c)what am i gonna do d)i cant believe this is happening e)i am so scared of having surgery. the only other time ive had surgery was when i had a c-section. i called my friend jessica, whos husband is an ortho surgeon who specializes in hands, to get a second opinion. james, or dr foley rather, called me right away and pulled some strings and was able to be my surgeon. that was awesome and made me feel so much better. i didnt get pain killers for 7 hours though and i was miserable and alone and lonely in the hospital and i must say the aurora hospital in summit has the WORST STAFF EVER in their emergency room. THE WORST. otherwise, its a really nice hospital with a really yummy cafeteria (my main priority of course) but seriously i dont think they treated me very nicely especially for being completely empty.
anywho i had the 2 hour surgery that night, told all the nurses on staff all of jakes christmas presents while i was coming out of my anesthesia. i was actually in a real good mood, holler drugs! my parents drove in the very next day and we ended up spending christmas and new years with my parents and my in laws. lets just say keya was a very happy, excited, and lucky girl! my sister and ryan flew in for new years too so it ended up being a lot of fun and after 3 weeks of being taken care of here, my mom, k, and i flew back to columbus for two weeks. it was nice relaxing there and i even got to see lekha and saanvi a ton, which was so fun. we just got back to wisconsin last weekend and things are starting to get better. my hand is improving tremendously each day, and while i still cant pick up keya or change diapers OR drive, i can do other things that i wasnt able to do for a month. its so nice. we have been so lucky to have both sets of our parents to help out so much. i really dont know what we would have done otherwise. it would have been a total nightmare. its also been nice for keya to spend some good quality time with her grandparents, and that was the best thing to happen out of this little mishap. blessings always come in disguise!
